Apr/May 2009 (Poll #5)
A Pearl of Wisdom
Number of respondents: 19
Please share a "pearl of wisdom" from your sponsor.
- My sponsor reminds me often, "You don't have to stay sober the rest of your life, you only have to be sober today."
- When I say, "I have a problem. I am not sure what to do. I feel upset and confused, etc." my sponsor says "Could you work your program around it?" My sponsor is the first to suggest that I could apply the program tools right now for what is in my face right now. I can think of what tools are accessible to me: perhaps making a program call; writing in my journal, or merely reciting the Serenity Prayer. Receiving this reminder about the program always helps me.
- You don't just work a Step, the Step works you.
- The quality of a man's maturity is his ability to manage ambiguity.
- Religion is for people who are afraid of going to hell. Spirituality is for those who have already been there.
- Let your addict have his say, but not his way.
- There's a lot of footwork to be done here and it's all necessary, but the solution will ultimately be a spiritual one.
- Recovery, like life, is a journey, not a destination. We never graduate. This is the longest journey we face everyday: the road from our head to our heart is the longest distance we travel.
- Don't kill yourself until you have at least five years of sobriety. If you did, you would be killing the wrong person.
- We were talking about my shame over my past, and he said "Nothing new under the sun." That helped me begin letting go of my feelings of uniqueness and hopelessness.
- In the addiction, I felt like two people who hated each other. In recovery, I am learning how to be one person who loves my whole self.
- You are never done working the Steps.
- Here I thought I was unique and different, and my sponsor tells me "I'm just another Bozo on the bus."
- Our interaction is just as valuable for me as it is for you.
- Forgiveness comes from working the Steps.
- "They're just f****** feelings." (Meaning that I could have them but I don't need to act on them.)
- More will be revealed.
- Make a plan. Unstructured time is never good for you.
Thanks to all who participated!
